McKeough Conservation Area
Happy Sunday!
McKeough is one of my favourite local hikes as it evokes many great memories for me. This trail is off of Holt Line between 40 and Kimball. Though it takes 10 minutes or so to reach the trail head from the back road it's worth it in every season. I'll never forget the first time I hiked this trail, I had only just started hiking and was met with tons of odd looking boxes at the entrance. I had no idea what they were but just heard the familiar buzzing (I'm slightly allergic). I got up the courage and ran as fast as I could past them only to have the sun start to set on me and I had to run back past them in order to get back to the car. But I survived! 🤪
The 3 km trail runs through the Carolian forest beside the dam and hosts rare blue ash .
The floodway channel also provides a 7 km (one way) walk from the St. Clair River to the dam. This wildlife corridor has been planted with 100,000 trees over the last ten years. The grass channel and treed berms make for excellent wildlife habitat. A birders dream!
Always remember to:
- Pack out what you pack in
- Walk single file when passing
- Yield to hikers coming uphill
- Respect wildlife
- Stay on the trail
Happy hiking & stay safe!
